Phelps, Chet. Chet Phelps was created by George Childerness and appeared in Murder in False Face (1943) and Too Many Murderers (1944).

Chet Phelps is the “confidential assistant” to Kent, the “crackpot publisher of twenty-odd newspapers” around the United States. As part of the job Phelps travels with Kent to each of the cities in which the papers are published, putting out various fires. In the course of their travels, Phelps and Kent encounter various murders and solve them. Phelps is a hard-drinking, wise-cracking man who has more experience than maturity, but he has persistence and Kent has attitude, and between them they manage to solve crimes, even though neither the police nor the underworld like or trust them.
