Petrie, Amos. Amos Petrie was created by John Victor Turner (Ebenezer Buckle, Mick Cardby, Tony Carter, Inspector Sanderson) and appeared in seven novels from 1932 to 1936, beginning with Death Must Have Laughed.
Amos Petrie is a short fortyish man with gray hair, weak eyes, knock knees, rimless spectacles, and a habit of rubbing his hands on a handkerchief every few minutes. He’s also “a solicitor, a fisherman, and the world’s prize-winning nosey parker,” in his own words, but despite his apologetic manner and irritating mannerisms he is a top crime-solver, on his own and for the Public Prosecutor’s Department. He has a discursive habit of speech and switches topics abruptly
