In the 19th century, in Ottoman-occupied Rumeli, Maria Pentayiotissa is a spirited and independent Greek teenager who is the object of affection of every man who knows her. But she refuses to be tied down to the tedium of village life, and she falls in love with a klepht (bandit and guerrilla fighter against the Ottomans) and joins his band in the mountains, becoming an able fighter herself.
