O’Shea, Michael. Michael O’Shea was created by Ralph D. Paine and appeared in six stories in The Popular Magazine and Sea Stories from 1912 to 1924, beginning with “The Guests of Captain O’Shea” (The Popular Magazine, Nov. 1, 1912).

Michael O’Shea is a mirthful Irish shipmaster, a “ruddy, well-knit figure of a man, young in years.” He is as “tough as sole leather,” and ranges from the Persian Gulf to the Yellow Sea and into the heart of China, coming into contact with a variety of bad men, including the Yellow Peril Painted Joss and the Sect of the Fatal Obligation. O’Shea’s friend and sidekick is the big older engineer Johnny Kent.
