O’Malley, Detective. Detective O’Malley was created by William MacHarg (Luther Trant) and appeared in forty-four stories in Collier’s Weekly and Mystery Book Magazine from 1930 to 1945, beginning with “Green Paint” (Collier’s Weekly, Nov. 29, 1930); thirty-three of the stories were collected in The Affairs of O’Malley (1933).

Detective O’Malley is a hard-boiled New York City policeman, the type who calls a woman “sister” and a man “pal.” He deals with basic, gritty murder cases, and while O’Malley is only a flatfoot, he is clever and sharp and more than a match for the criminals and cases he handles.
