Noggins, Peter. Peter Noggins was created by Johnston McCulley (The Avenging Twins, Bat (II), Black Star, Jim Bodney, Crimson Clown, Captain Goodwin, Green Ghost, Richard Hughes, Man in Purple, Mongoose, Peanut Pete, Spider (I), Thubway Tham, Thunderbolt (I), Terry Trimble, Whirlwind, Zorro) and appeared in six stories in Detective Story Magazine in 1920, beginning with “Initiating Noggins” (Detective Story Magazine, Apr. 6, 1920).
Peter Noggins is a detective for the City Police (which City is never specified, but in all likelihood it is New York City). Noggins is a small, frail man, a widower with a bundle of nervous tics and an apologetic manner. He is thoroughly lacking in the physical necessities of police work. However, he has in abundance the most important requirement: brains. He is very smart, and proves it, both to the Chief of Police and to the criminals, by capturing various thieves and murderers. He is brave, too, risking sure death to catch his men, and taking beatings and bullets and still surviving.
