Mullett, Sheriff. Sheriff Mullett was created by Claude Rister (Freck Gilmore) and appeared in a number of stories in Lariat Story Magazine in 1926, beginning with “Desert Law” (Lariat Story Magazine, May 1926).

“Dreamy” Gus Mullett is the chubby sheriff of Hellgap, assisted by old “Crawdad” Williams as deputy. Mullett is a very calm crime-solver who says things like, “They’s a bean in the gravy. They’s a lot of smugglin’ and’ gun-runnin’ an’ rustlin’ goin’ on. Me an’ the gov’ment man was sorter workin’ cahoots.”
