Müller, Joseph. Joseph Müller was created by the Austrian author Auguste Gröner and appeared in thirteen stories and novels from 1893 to 1917, beginning with Die Goldene Kugel.

Joseph Müller is a policeman in Vienna. He has a criminal past, so he cannot advance to the top of the police force, but he is content to remain only a detective, as that allows him to investigate and solve crimes which a commissioner would never hear about. Müller is passionate about helping the weak and capturing criminals–so much so that he angers his superiors on the police force with his abrasive statements. Müller does have some mercy, however, and will let a criminal go if the crime was committed for what Müller thinks was an understandable reason. Some of Müller’s stories verge on the fantastic.
