Messenger, Special. The Special Messenger was created by Robert W. Chambers (Cardigan, Rue Carew, Francis Gilland, Green Mouse Society, Westrel Keen, William Manners, Percy Smith) and appeared in five stories in The Saturday Evening Post in 1908, beginning with “Absolution” (Saturday Evening Post, Aug 22, 1908).

The Special Messenger is a female spy for the Union during the American Civil War. She is tall, freckled, red-headed, and as capable, smart, and, when need be, hard as any man. She spies on the Confederates and captures their spies, although she is sick at heart of carnage and war and longs for peacetime.
