Mendoza, Julian. Julian Mendoza was created by James Ronald and appeared in four stories in Thriller and two novels from 1933 to 1939, beginning with Cross Marks the Spot.

Julian Mendoza is a crime reporter for the London Morning World. He is a tall, swaggering man who walks with a limp, aided by a blackthorn stick. “He had a rough masculine ugliness which is often more attractive in a man than good looks. A large head which might have been hacked out of a block of stone, topped with a shock or iron-grey hair…a wide, thin-lipped mouth, almost like a knife-gash, which yet had a boyish twist when he was pleased or amused.” He is thirty-seven years old and smokes a malodorous pipe.
