Mendax (I). Mendax (I) was created by the Australian author Erle Cox (Earani) and appeared in four stories in the Australasian from 1920 to 1924, beginning with “The Great Mendax Transmitter” (The Australasian, Mar. 27, 1920).
Mendax (I) is an Unlucky Inventor. Major Mendax (Latin for "liar") is an eccentric whose experiments never go quite right. He experiments with invisibility, matter transmission, rejuvenation, and extracting gold from sea water. His experiment with matter transmission anticipates the movie The Fly by many years, with Mendax ending up with parts of a dog on his inside and his outside.
