Mejzlik, Dr. Dr. Mejzlik was created by the Czech author Karel Capek (Rossum) and appeared in forty-eight stories in Lidové Noviny in 1928, beginning with “Dr. Mejzlik’s Case” (Lidové Noviny, 1928); the stories were collected in Tales from One Pocket (1929) and Tales from the Other Pocket (1929).

Detective Captain Dr. Mejzlik is a member of the Prague police force. He is an ordinary man, somewhat hot-tempered, who is forced to deal with a wide variety of crimes and criminals, none of which are particularly brutal but several of which are quite puzzling. Dr. Mejzlik is a realistic, down-to-earth character, as is the milieu he lives and works in and the crimes and criminals he deals with.
