McQuirk, Lonesome. Lonesome McQuirk was created by Robert Ormond Case (Ravenhill, Dynamite Smith) and appeared in sixteen stories in Western Story Magazine from 1924 to 1929, beginning with “‘Lonesome’ McQuirk and the Amazons” (Western Story Magazine, Mar. 1, 1924).
In Wasco County, somewhere in the American Southwest, Lonesome McQuirk is the unofficial enforcer of the law. He is fifty years old and a former Texas Ranger. He is good-natured, independent, laconic (which is mistaken for a lack of enthusiasm) and efficient, but when he has to deal with women, especially intelligent and assertive ones, he becomes meek.
