McKee, Buckshot. Buckshot McKee was created by Lee Floren (Judge Bates, Funeral O’Neill) and appeared in fifteen stories and over 100 novels from 1944 to 1992, beginning with “Buck McKee’s Gunsmoke Trap” (Complete Cowboy, Summer 1944).
Buckshot McKee and his best friend and partner Tortilla Joe are a pair of working cowboys whose life, when not involved in gunplay, crime-solving, and adventure, involves buying and selling horses and engaging in long cattle drives from Texas to Wyoming. “Buck McKee had been in and out of more jails in the west than there were years to his life, and at least once had come dangerously close to having his neck stretched by a rope.” McKee is lanky.
