McBride, John. John McBride was created by “Wesley Long,” the pseudonym of George O. Smith, and appeared in “Latent Image” (Astounding, May 1944) and “The Fixer” (Astounding, May 1945).

In the future John McBride is a wealthy, famous, and brilliant scientist. But he is stuck at Satan’s Hotel, on Pluto, while his pregnant wife Enid is on a small station halfway between Earth and Pluto. John is anxious about the pregnancy, but Enid’s doctor has ordered him to stay away. But then John hears Enid has fallen and hurt herself, and he becomes frantic to get to her side. However, there’s no ship making the trip to the station any time soon, so John is forced to fix an advanced engine on a new ship just so he can get to her. In sequel he fixes another engine for his irascible pilot Sandra Drake.
