Maynard, Professor. Professor Maynard was created by James P. Marshall and appeared in “The World in the Balance” (Argosy-All Story, Apr. 16, 1927) and “Warriors of Space” (Science Wonder Stories, June 1929).

Professor Arthur Maynard watches, with the rest of humanity, as a globe-shaped alien spaceship lands in Manhattan, attacks the neighborhood with a disintegrator ray, and then issues a threat that in three days humanity will have to surrender or be destroyed. Fortunately, Maynard sees that the disintegrator rays are not affecting gold, so he has the city construct gold-plated armor, which reflects the rays back on to the alien ship and destroys it. In the sequel the aliens, Dionians from Saturn, return, and attack San Francisco. Maynard and his son Donald invent an anti-gravity ship which they use to destroy the invaders, though not before Saturn is pushed into the sun.
