Master of the Day of Judgment. The Master was created by the Austrian author Leo Perutz and appeared in Der Meister des Juengsten Tages (1923).

“The Master of the Day of Judgment” is God, and Der Meister des Juengsten Tages is about a drug that makes people see Him. Unfortunately, those who take the drug, which was created in Florence in the 16th century, also see the Day of Judgment and all the demons of Hell. And the demons of Hell see those who take the drug, which leads the drug-taker to feel that she or he is being attacked by the demons of Hell, and then to commit suicide. The novel, set in Vienna in 1909, is structured like a murder mystery, with the identity of the murderer–the person murdered, who was not murdered but committed suicide–only being revealed near the end, as are the secrets underlying all the events in the novel.
