Martin, Mournful. Mournful Martin was created by Charles Wesley Sanders (Toole) and appeared in seventeen stories in Complete Stories and five novels from 1931 to at least 1937, beginning with “A Message for Mournful Martin” (Complete Stories, Sept 15, 1931).

The ironically named Mournful Martin (he’s a bragging hothead, though not unlikable) works for Bob Danforth, the owner of the Three D Ranch, somewhere on the frontier.
