Marduk. Marduk was created by the German author Alfred Döblin and appeared in Berge Meere und Giganten (1924).
A thousand years in the future humanity has created a society which uses technology for everything, including creating food. Humanity no longer farms, but eats factory-made “meki.” The West has beaten the Yellow Peril East in a world war. Humanity is at peace. However, humanity’s separation from the land creates alienation which the German Marduk decides to cure by returning to the land. Marduk decides to defrost Greenland. Unfortunately, this awakens the monsters beneath the ice, and humanity, in response, is forced to produce giants to fight them. After this battle humanity begins anew, closer to the land and absent the soul-annihilating technology.
