Mantini, Signor. Signor Mantini appeared in a number of stories in The Startler in 1931, beginning with “A Strange Discovery!” (The Startler, May 2, 1931).

Signor Mantini is an irascible Italian who drives all trespassers off his land. But two, Dan Webster and Fred Faber, discover the reason for Mantini’s hostility: Mantini has discovered a race of giant (six feet long), subterranean, semi-intelligent beetles with whom he can communicate. He intends to use them to CONQUER THE WORLD! Fortunately, Webster and Faber discover a race of giant wasps they can communicate with, and so wasps and beetles battle in the skies over London.
