Man in Grey (I). The Man in Grey (I) was created by H. de Vere Stacpoole (Mynheer Amayat, Captain Blood (II), Lavenne, Dick Lestrange, Jacques Radoub, Sigurdson, Captain Slocum) and appeared in “The Man in Grey” (Pearson’s Magazine (UK), Nov. 1909-Apr 1910).

In the years before the French Revolution the Chevalier de Rennes is arrested and sent to the Bastille. The reason: he is in possession of a paper which would send M. de Sartines, the Chief of Police, to jail if the paper were presented to the King. De Rennes makes the mistake of confiding this piece of information to his lover, who betrays him and helps engineer his imprisonment. De Rennes escapes from the Bastille and in the guise of the Man in Grey carries out a long program of swashbuckling revenge against Sartines and all others who hurt him.
