Magee, Andrew. Andrew Magee was created by “Wayne Rogers,” the pseudonym for A.H. Bittner (Brother Henry, Dodo Temple) and appeared in four stories in Strange Detective Mysteries in 1941 and 1942, beginning with “Andrew Magee and the Gray Ghost” (Strange Detective Mysteries, Mar 1941).
Andrew Magee is a New York City policeman turned hard-boiled private detective who quickly gains a reputation for being able to help anyone out of a jam. Magee is good, no question–cunning, resourceful, resilient, unswerving, and quick and accurate with his gun–and he has the help of “Laura Sprague, his secretary and chief factotum,” but even so he is hard-pressed to defeat the masked madman, would-be world-conquerors, and deranged and occult-science-wielding criminals who plague New York.
