Maciste (I). Maciste (I) was created by the Italian creators Gabriele D’Annunzio and Giovanni Pastrone and appeared in over fifty films from 1914 to the present, beginning with Cabiria.
In Cabiria, during the third century B.C.E., Maciste is a loyal, enormously strong African slave to Fulvio Axilla, a Roman spy. The pair rescue a girl who has been sold to the Carthaginians to be sacrificed to Moloch. In later films Maciste is a white Italian who has a series of adventures around the world, from the Mediterranean to Mongolia and from the Roman era to the present day. Maciste fights Zorro, in Zorro Contro Maciste (1963); Maciste fights the Austrians during World War One; Maciste fights Yellow Peril Japanese spies; Maciste fights tyrants who sacrifice humans to evil gods; Maciste ventures into King Solomon’s Mines; and Maciste fights against and then teams up with Hercules, Sansone, and Ursus, in Ercole, Sansone, Maciste e Ursus: Gli Invincibili (1965).
