MacCray, Philip. Philip MacCray was created by “Owen Fox Jerome,” the pseudonym of Oscar J. Friend (George Bacon), and appeared in five novels from 1927 to 1959, beginning with The Hand of Horror.
Philip MacCray is the Assistant Chief of Detectives for the Chicago Police Department. “He had an individualistic air which was positively pugnacious. His body seemed to overflow with crisp determination and dynamic energy.” He is always immaculately and stylishly dressed, and is enough of a neat freak that a soiled sweatband in his hat is enough to make him replace the hat immediately. He is shorter than average–less than five and a half feet tall–and has a large head, sandy hair, a broad chest and shoulders and a slim torso.
