Lee, Tonopah. Tonopah Lee was created by “Eli Colter,” the pseudonym of May Eliza Frost (Alabam, Balaam), and appeared in nine stories in Lariat Story Magazine and North West Stories from 1926 to 1929, beginning with “Triggers, Trouble, and Tonopah Lee” (North West Stories, Nov. 15, 1926).
Tonopah Lee is a cowboy who works for the Quarter-Circle-L Ranch and yearns for some action: “Gawd! I shore wisht somethin’d happen!” When it happens, he’s more than capable: “When yuh cross horns with uh hombre that plays a dirty game—give him some of his own medicine.”
