Lee Fu Chang. Lee Fu Chang was created by Lincoln Colcord and appeared in “An Instrument of the Gods” (The American Magazine, Apr 1921) and “Unmasked” (The American Magazine, June 1923).
Lee Fu Chang is a Chinese sailor on a variety of ships which sail the Pacific. He is a skilled sailor, wise, perfectly articulate in English, calm, and well-intentioned toward all. He is devoted to Mindoro “Minnie” Amesbury, an orphan who he has helped raise. When Lee sees an injustice, such as a white ship’s captain having committed murder and gotten away with it, Lee arranges matters so that the captain is punished. Lee is noble enough that Colcord might well have designed him to be a rebuke to the Yellow Peril stereotypes in popular fiction.
