Lao Can. Lao Cann was created by the Chinese author Liu E and appeared in Lao Can Youji (1903-1904).
Lao Can is a wandering doctor who acts in the same manner as the Nüxia/Wüxia, righting wrongs wherever he finds them. Unfortunately, many of the wrongdoers that Lao Can encounters are officials, from a hubristic and morally rigid judge to a governor willing to let thousands of civilians die. Lao Can shows such insight in solving a murder case that he is described as the “Chinese Sherlock Holmes,” and in one case finds a miraculous antidote for an otherwise fatal poison.
