Klump, Willie. Willie Klump was created by Joe Archibald (Dizzy Duo, Elmer and Pokey, Alvin Hinkey, Ambrose Hooley, Kid Tarzan, Windy Knight, Phineas Pinkham, Hattie Pringle, Walrus & Wishbone, Jonathan Wise) and appeared in sixty-three stories in Popular Detective and The Phantom Detective from 1938 to 1951, beginning with “Bird Cagey” (Popular Detective, Jan. 1938).

William J. “Willie” Klump is an ugly, worn-down private eye, shabby in appearance and mournful in personality. He was a plainclothes detective but quit to form his own agency, the Hawkeye Detective Agency. He was successful enough to become known as the “Hawkeye Hawkshaw.” Klump is not extremely intelligent and sometimes goes weeks without collecting what he is owed (his clients are often as much deadbeats as the people Klump goes after). Klump is friends with policeman “Satchelfoot” Kelly, who views Klump with amused and affectionate contempt. Klump’s girlfriend is Gertie Mudgett, an attractive blonde who worked as his secretary, among other things, and who is tougher and more intelligent than Klump.
