Kerwood, Charles. Charles Kerwood was created by Allan Duncan and appeared in An Official Secret (1937) and A Cabinet Minister Resigns (1939).

Major Charles Douglas Kerwood is a high-ranking official in British Intelligence. He looks like a gentleman of leisure, and has a somewhat blustering, hot-tempered manner, but in reality he is a cold, hard intelligence operative and handler of agents who oversees a long, grim war against the Germans. Some of his agents engage in heroics, but others die badly, and there is corruption and deceit among the British as well as the Germans. Kerwood has regrets for his own behavior and disgust for the wilderness of mirrors in which he lives, and in sum is George Smiley avant la lettre.
