Kelly, Ned. Ned Kelly (1854-1880) was an Australian bushranger (bandit) who became famous for wearing steel armor to protect himself from bullets. During his lifetime Kelly was admired for his bravery and defiance of authority and has become a national icon in Australia. He appeared in several stories in Startler in 1930 and 1931 beginning with “Outlaws!” (Startler, Nov. 1 1930).
The fictional Kelly is portrayed as a sentimental Gentleman Bandit.
