Kells, Gerry. Gerry Kells was created by “Paul Cain,” the pseudonym of George Sims (Black (II)), and appeared in five stories in Black Mask in 1932, beginning with “Fast One” (Black Mask, Mar. 1932); the stories were collected in Fast One (1932).

Gerry Kells is a Bellem. He is a gambler in Los Angeles who lives off his winnings. Unfortunately, the Syndicate in Los Angeles wants him to do them a favor, and when he refuses, things get difficult for him. The Syndicate pursues him, and he’s wanted for murder by the police. Ultimately he dies along with his opponents. Kells is a quick shot and is an honorable survivor who crosses the wrong gangster and falls for the wrong (hard-drinking) dame.
