Karmesin. Karmesin was created by Gerald Kersh and appeared in seventeen stories from 1936 to 1962, beginning with “Karmesin” (Evening Standard, May 9, 1936).

Karmesin is a Tall Tale Teller. Karmesin is, probably, the world’s greatest liar. But if his stories are to be believed–and possibly they should be–he is an exceptional Con Man and thief. If that is the case, he is both clever and meticulous in his preparations. He is an older man with a big mustache.

* I'm including the Karmesin stories in the Best of the Encyclopedia category because they are a lot of fun. Gerald Kersh is unjustly forgotten now--he wrote Night and the City, for crying out loud! But my favorites of his are the Karmesin stories. I'm a sucker for a good Tall Tale Teller story, and the Karmesin stories are that many times over. That they are also great Con Man stories simply adds to the reader's pleasure. If tall tales and con man schemes are your thing, you'll love the Karmesin stories.
