Jubal. Jubal appeared in a number of stories in The Startler in 1930, beginning with “The Lad—the Leopard—and the Lion!” (The Startler, May 10, 1930).
Jubal is a Jungle Hero. Jubal has no memory of his childhood, and lived among apes in the African jungles until very recently—he is a teenager now—when he left the tribe and began traveling. His accompanied by the lion, Zimba. Jubal helped heal Zimba when he was wounded, and he took to Jubal and became his friend and protector, along with M’popo, Zimba’s mate. Jubal fights evil, often but not always in the form of white men.
