Jackson, John J. John J. Jackson was created by David T. Lindsay and appeared in four novels from 1936 to 1939, beginning with Inspector Jackson Investigates.

John J. “Jailbird” Jackson is a Chief Inspector with Scotland Yard. He is “gloomy, volcanic, utterly unconventional,” and a strict materialist: “he had laid many a spook in his time–mention ghosts to ‘Jailbird’ and you were met with a cold sneer and a grunt, perhaps.” Cranky, gloomy, prone to violent speech, cynical, of rough looks, and an above-average investigator--that’s “Jailbird” Jackson. He is assisted by reporter Peter Selwyn.
