Hungry and Rusty. Hungry and Rusty were created by Samuel H. Nickels and appeared in 138 stories in Wild West Weekly from 1932 to 1943, beginning with “Two Cow-Punch Rangers” (Wild West Weekly, Feb. 27, 1932).
“Rusty” Bolivar and his partner “Hungry” Hawkins are a pair of Texas Rangers, in Company B, under the command of crusty old-timer Captain Roberts. Hungry is the fastest draw in the Rangers, although Rusty is plenty fast. Hungry is tall, lanky, lantern-jawed, ugly, and likes to chew tobacco and play the accordion. Rusty is little, bow-legged, freckle-faced, and plays the jew’s-harp. The pair are often dispatched to run killers to earth no matter what.
