Horrocks, Mr. Mr. Horrocks was created by C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne (John Bryn-Scarlett, Captain Kettle, Commander McTurk) and appeared in seventeen stories in Pearson’s Magazine (US) in 1900 and 1901, beginning with “The Looting of the Specie-Room” (Pearson’s Magazine (US), July 1900); the stories were collected in Mr. Horrocks, Purser (1901).

Mr. Horrocks is the purser of various passenger liners. He is stout, a wealthy bachelor, and is known to be “one of the artfullest pursers in all the Western Ocean passenger trade at making ‘bits for himself’ by various well-recognised methods.” He works hard to watch over the materiel on his ships and to solve various problems on the ships, even and if those problems involve the theft of hundreds of thousands of pounds from the ship’s hold, an eloping Austrian princess, diamond smuggling, or a possibly false World’s Greatest Pianist. Horrocks usually enriches himself in the process of solving these problems, but much of his profit goes to help the Rock’s Orphanage.
