Hooker Brothers. The Hooker Brothers were created by Ray Nafziger and appeared in eighty-six stories in Ace-High Magazine and Thrilling Western from 1923 to 1938, beginning with “The Dancing Jakcass of Canyon Lobo” (Ace-High Magazine, Apr. 1, 1923).
Johnny and Steve Hooker are a pair of ranchers at Canyon Lobo somewhere in the American southwest. They have to deal with a variety of nuisances: “vampire baby” Femmes Fatale, abruptly vicious weather (“Pete’s Pants, but does it turn cold!”), their colleagues trying to top them in tall-tale competitions, bad guys, and the many other challenges which provoke such exclamations as “Gallopin’ Mountain Goats!”
