Honest John. Honest John was created by William O. Grenolds and appeared in twelve stories in Blue Book Magazine in 1919 and 1920, beginning with “The Word of Honest John” (Blue Book Magazine, Apr. 1919).

Honest John is a Con Man. “Honest John” Barker is the “fixer extraordinary for the Mighty Maxwell Three-ring Circus.” But he’s as often interested in lining his own pockets as he is in helping the Circus, and he’s quite clever at doing that. But he’s got a code of honor, and in his own words “I don’t usually hand a wallop to another guy until he’s made a pass at me.” Because he steals primarily from criminals the police tend to look upon him favorably and even help him out on occasion.
