Homes, Shylock. Shylock Homes was created by John Kendrick Bangs (Raffles Holmes, the Idiot, Jimmieboy, Mrs. A.J. van Raffles) and appeared in eight stories in The New York Herald in 1903, beginning with “Mr. Homes Acts as Attorney for Solomon” (New York Herald, 1903).

Shylock Homes is a Great Detective. He is a Sherlock Holmes parody working in the Hades of Bangs’ Houseboat on the River Styx (1905). Homes works with a number of other dead figures from history, including Lucretia Borgia and Mme. du Barry, and solves the question as to whether Francis Bacon is the author of the works of Shakespeare.
