Holst, Eigil. Eigil Holst was created by the Danish author Baron Palle Rosenkrantz and appeared in six novels from 1903 to 1908, beginning with Hvad Skovsøen Gemte. Rosenkrantz was Denmark's first mystery writer, and Eigil Holst was Denmark's first original detective character.

Eigil Holst is a realistic, quite human lieutenant inspector working for the Copenhagen police department. He is methodical and sensible as a detective and uses the methods of Sherlock Holmes, although in personality he has been compared to Jules Maigret. Holst was fascinated by detective novels as a child and as an adult drove himself to become well-educated in the theory and practice of criminology.
