Hill, Asmun. Asmun Hill was created by Hector Hawton and appeared in seven novels from 1945 to 1954, beginning with Murder at H.Q. Wing Commander the Honourable Asmun Hill twice won the D.F.C. flying three hundred hours of operation during World War Two, and was so badly wounded in crashes that he would never fly combat missions again. Instead he stays on the ground, at Bassingham Park, telling stories (which the narrator compares to Kai Lung’s) and, when the occasion calls for it, solving mysteries. Hill is a former Oxford don who is an expert on both flying and archaeology, although it is his native intelligence, general education, and his left-leaning politics which are most useful to him on cases.
