Hicks, Professor. Professor Hicks was created by Henry Hugh Simmons and appeared in four stories in Amazing Stories in 1927 and 1928, beginning with “The Automatic Self-Serving Dining Table” (Amazing Stories, Apr. 1927).
Professor Hicks is an Unlucky Inventor. He is an eccentric whose creations never quite turn out right. Typical among them is the “Electro-Hydraulic Bank Protector,” which electrically projects high-powered water hoses during robberies and riots to protect banks. Other inventions include a spinning, self-serving dining table and a “perambulating home.” Hicks’ poor schmuck assistant is Fred C. O’Keefe.
