Hawkes, A.B.C. A.B.C. Hawkes was created by “Ephesian,” the pseudonym of Carl Eric Bechhofer Roberts, and appeared in twenty-three short stories and a novel from 1934 to 1937, beginning with “Virgin Snow” (The Passing Show, Mar 17 1934).

A.B.C. Hawkes is a Great Detective heavily modeled on Sherlock Holmes. But Hawkes did not begin that way. Initially he is merely a well-dressed, wealthy, madcap redheaded yacht owner and eccentric amateur detective. He soon became much more Holmesian and his friend Johnstone became more Watsonian. Hawkes is brilliant but quick-tempered, accomplished in a number of scientific fields, and a hater of the press.
