Happy-Hay. Happy-Hay was created by W.C. Tuttle (Cultus Collins, Henry Conroy, Hashknife Hartley, Howdy Hepburn, Sad Sontag, Tombstone and Speedy, Warwhoop Wilson) and appeared in seven stories in New Western Magazine from 1934 to 1936, beginning with “Happy Hay, Hoss Trader” (New Western Magazine, Nov. 1934).
Tom “Happy” Hay is a horse trader in the Old West. Strangely, that role entails numerous gunfights. Although he says, of himself, that “I’m not a gunman. I’m just a hoss-trader, and I’m not even a good hoss-trader,” another man describes him as “’bout the best damned shot with a Colt or a saddle gun anybody ever seen.” He is in his thirties and is plain, tall, and angular.
