Hanaud, Inspector. Inspector Hanaud was created by A.E.W. Mason and appeared in five stories and five novels from 1909 to 1946, beginning with “The Murder at the Villa Rose” (The Strand Magazine, Dec. 1909); he later appeared in seven movies.

Inspector Gabriel Hanaud is an officer of the Sûreté. He is a plump, middle-aged policeman who has a seemingly lighthearted attitude towards everything. This usually masks his real feelings, but helps give others a feeling of security around him; people are usually reassured by his presence. While not extremely intelligent, he is not stupid, but his success as a policeman comes from perseverance and his use of police tactics and skills. He is sympathetic toward most people, has a strong sense of justice, and can be ruthless towards murderers and other evil men. His cases occasionally veer into the fantastic, as when he pursues a weretiger or takes on master criminals.
