Halstead, Arthur. Arthur Halstead was created by William Edward Hayes and appeared in The Black Doll (1936), Before the Cock Crowed (1937), and The Black Chronicle (1937).

Arthur Halstead is a former N.Y.P.D. detective who was hired away from the force by the famous John J. Goff, head of his own detective agency. Now Halstead works for Goff, complaining about it all the while. Halsted came up from the very tough Hudson Dusters district on New York’s docks, and remains a product of them. He is “a lean gentleman with a long face and lugubrious eyes which at times could be disarmingly wistful, and which missed nothing when there was occasion to observe.”
