Grandpa. Grandpa was created by Ray Humphreys (Bumblebee Bill, Shorty McKay) and appeared in “Grandpa Cracks His Whip” (Western Story Magazine, Apr. 6, 1929) and “Grandpa Takes ‘em for a Ride” (Western Story Magazine, June 15, 1929).
“Grandpa” McMeel is the “veteran six-mule-hitch driver for the Como Stage Lines” on the Western frontier, working directly under Superintendent John Dea. Grandpa has glittering faded blue eyes and white whiskers, but he’s vigorous enough to deal whatever bushwhackers assault him or deputy sheriffs want to transport unfairly convicted criminals.
