Gallegher. Gallegher was created by “Lewis Padgett,” a pseudonym of Henry Kuttner (The Baldies, Yusef ben Yakoud, Elak, Hogbens, Michael Leigh, Pete Manx, Tony Quade, Prince Raynor, Doctor Thorkel, Thunder Jim Wade), and appeared in five stories in Astounding Science Fiction from 1943 to 1948, beginning with “Time Locker” (Astounding Science Fiction, Jan. 1943); the stories were collected in Robots Have No Tails (1952).

Gallegher is a brilliant inventor, but he has a problem: he is only brilliant and inventive when he is drunk. When he is sober, he has to deal with the consequences of his drunkenness and invention, including irate clients, demanding bill-collectors, and a vain robot named Joe of Gallegher’s own creation. And, usually, when he is sober he has no memory of why he invented a particular device, including Joe, or what its purpose might be.
