Furnivall, Doctor. Doctor Furnivall was created by George F. Butler and appeared in twelve stories which were collected in The Exploits of a Physician Detective (1908).

Doctor Furnivall is a physician turned detective. He is approached by a friend for help in solving a case, and Furnivall finds that he enjoys the intellectual challenge of crime-solving so much that he continues working at it as a kind of consulting detective. He uses logic and deduction but relies chiefly on hypnotism, at which he is skilled. Furnivall is so powerful a hypnotist and so quick at it (he hypnotizes others simply by gazing at them) that it often seems like mind control. He is middle-aged, a materialist, and critical, in a genial way, of the police. He is Watsoned by his friend, Dr. Gerrish.
