Free, Donald. Donald Free was created by Raoul Whitfield (Ben Breed, Dion Davies, Jo Gar, Gary Greer, Ben Jardinn, Buck Kent, Captain MacLeod, Mel Ourney, Chuck Reddington, Bill Scott, Alan van Cleve) and appeared in three stories in Black Mask and one film in 1932 and 1933, beginning with "Man Killer” (Black Mask, Apr. 1932). Donald Free is a former government agent who was forced to resign in disgrace–the exact cause is of the disgrace is never described--and left to take a job at the Hammond Agency, an especially tawdry and seedy detective agency whose clients are often guilty. Free is hard-boiled, but when he grins it makes him look boyish, almost ten years younger.
